What is a Fire Pump Controller?

A fire suppression system consists of a sprinkler system, a pump to supply water to the sprinkler heads, an electric motor or diesel engine and a fire pump controller. When there is a fire, there needs to be a continuous flow of water to the sprinkler heads to extinguish the fire. In some cases, when the city’s water pressure is not sufficient, a fire pump is used to provide the necessary water pressure. The fire pump controller monitors the pressure and runs the system in the event of a fire. It provides a means to start an electric motor or diesel engine, which in turn starts the fire pump.

NFPA 25: Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems

Pursuant to NFPA 25, Standard for the Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance of Water-based Fire Protection Systems, 2023 edition, a preventive maintenance program must be established according to the manufacturer's recommendations for all components of the pump assembly. The program must begin after the pump assembly has passed all acceptance tests (See NFPA 25 Section 8.5.1 – 8.5.3 and Table 8.1.1.2 – Maintenance). Failure to comply could result in loss of life and/or property. The warranty may also be deemed null and void.

Our FPC Maintenance Program Includes:

  • Perform a visual inspection of interior and exterior of fire pump controller.
  • Clean the controller interior to remove any dust and/or debris.
  • Torque and tighten all electrical connections inside the controller.
  • Confirm incoming voltages, run the fire pump on “normal” and backup power sources (if applicable), and perform a thermographic scan of the controller electrical connections.
  • Measure and record the fire pump startup and running amperages and confirm pump rotation.
  • Confirm operation of the controller outputs to the fire alarm panel, and the operation of all pilot lights and alarms.
  • Simulate failure of the normal power source to verify transfer and startup of the backup power supply (if applicable).
  • Simulate pressure drop events on both the normal and backup power sources (if applicable) to verify system functionality.
  • Download the event log from the HMI and review for accuracy and identification of any abnormalities.
  • Provide a maintenance and testing report including identification of any deficiencies and recommendations for rectification.
